Project 6: Stationery

  • Description: This is a full-bleed, matching letterhead and business card stationery set created along with a custom logo.
  • Process (Programs, Tools, Skills): I created the logo in Adobe Illustrator. I used dotted lines to create the circles for the logo as well as the border. I chose fonts that had plenty of contrast. One is an all caps serif font and the other is a script font. The colors are pulled from a Design Seeds color scheme. Once the logo was created, I opened up a 2-page document in Adobe InDesign. There I created the text for the name and business information. I repeated the logo on the letterhead and again on the business card. I also repeated the dotted border to tie the design together. I took the medium blue color from the dots and found the lightest hue of that blue and made that the background for the business card.
  • Message: The company is a graphic design company that created cute, fun designs for birthday cards, wedding invitations, birth announcements, and photo cards.
  • Audience: The audience is anyone looking for cute, fun graphic design services.

Project 5: Logos


  1. Description: This is a logo for an acoustic music band named Winterwood
  2. Process (Programs, Tools, Skills): I created the entire logo in Adobe Illustrator. I used the o’s and the d to serve double duty as both the letters in the band name as well as the tuner keys on the top of the guitar neck. I chose a mahogany, brick color for the guitar neck and then worked in a triadic color scheme to pull the whole design together.
  3. Message: Winterwood is a band associated with acoustic music and guitars.
  4. Audience: Anyone who interacts with the band or appreciates their style of music
  5. Top Thing Learned: I learned how to use the pen and shape tools to create designs in Illustrator.
  6. Color Scheme and Color Names: Triadic: Indigo, Lime and Brick

Project 4: Montage


  • Description: An inspirational piece of art made by blending several images and using beautiful typography.
  • Process (Programs, Tools, Skills, Steps taken while designing): I cropped the image of the stormy ocean. I used the lasso in Photoshop to pull the rainbow from another image into this one. I used a mask and a 100% opacity brush to soften the edges of the rainbow. I used a 30% opacity brush to soften the whole thing and blend it into the stormy ocean. I found an image of falling rain and layered that over the ocean image. I used a blending mode and reduced the opacity to make the raindrops really subtle. I added in the typography by grabbing the purple color from the water and finding contrasting fonts that work well to convey the quote. I positioned the white copy so it forms a very subtle rainbow shape to further emphasize the design. I added the border and erased part of the edges to allow the key words in the quote to break through.
  • Message: In life, we are given trials and challenges. It’s important for us to recognize and be thankful for the challenges (the rain) and then to appreciate the rainbows.
  • Audience: The audience is anyone who is experiencing trials. It’s meant to give a moment of reflection.
  • Top Thing Learned: I learned how to gradually blend several images.

Composition 2: Lead Room

For this project, I learned how to take photographs and make them look great. In the first two photos, I played with light. In Light 1, I used only natural light outside. I set my light meter on the sky to preserve the brilliance of the blue. I also shot at the end of the day when the light makes everything more vibrant. In Light 2, I used artificial light inside. I used the flash on my camera to light the flowers and the Love sign.

In the second two photos, I varied the focus. In Focus 1, I used the macro setting on my Nikon D90 camera to focus on the steering wheel while keeping the keys and background out of focus. In Focus 2, I switched the focal point and blurred the foreground while bringing the keys into focus.

In the last two photos, I used different compositions to make the images interesting. In Composition 1, I lined up the trees on the left on the vertical one-third grid line and I lined up the river along the bottom third horizontal grid line. In Composition 2, I used natural light from the window to illuminate my son. I placed him on the left side of the composition to to give lead room.

Project 2: Event Ad



Description: A color, full-bleed ad to promote a mountainside yoga retreat benefit event using only Microsoft Word and a scanner.

Process (Programs, Tools, Skills, FOCUS principles): I scanned the image of the lady practicing yoga. I added the box of blue to the right to mimic the blues from the sky and mountains, and also to keep the feel of the ad calm. I chose white for the text because of the high contrast against the blue. I kept the fonts clean and simple. There is a lot of white space in the photo as well as in the blue box on the right. I used an Oldstyle font for the name of the retreat and I used a clean sans serif font for the rest of the text.

Message: The is advertising a Mountainside Yoga Retreat sponsored by Namaste Clothing Company to benefit the non-profit online yoga website,

Audience: The intended audience are those who are into fitness, health, wellness, and yoga.

Color scheme and color names: I used a monochromatic color scheme. I used blues to elicit a calm, tranquil feeling.

Top Thing Learned: I learned how to use Microsoft Word in a pinch to design if that’s the only program available.

Scanned images used, sources, original sizes, location of scanner used: The image came from the May 2015 Yoga Journal magazine. It was an advertisement for MPG Clothing Company. The image was originally 9.5″ x 7″, so I scanned it at a high resolution and then played with the dimensions until I found a size and cropping that worked for my ad.

Project 1: Flier



Description: Black & white flier to advertise a graduate leadership conference.

Process (Programs, Tools, Skills, FOCUS principles): I started out with four sketches for ideas. I liked the one with the square elements, so I recreated my sketch in InDesign. I used strong contrast to create the title by putting a bold text against a black background. I used alignment throughout the entire design. Every element aligns with something else. I used Photoshop to mask the image. By doing so, I created a strong sense of white space. The small squares are repeating elements and they are following the rule of odds because they are always in sets of three.

Message: This message is intended for college graduates who plan to pursue professional careers in business. This flier is intended to draw them in, grab their attention, and get them to attend this convention.

Audience: The audience is recent college graduates who plan to pursue a professional career in business.

Top Thing Learned: I learned that not everything needs to be in a box. Alignment and just the right elements can achieve a similar effect as opposed to using boxes to contain everything on a flier.
